Free parking in Sydney city for scooters and motorcycles

SYDNEY’S streets are expected to be flooded with scooters and motorcycles after the city council announced free parking for riders across the entire city.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore yesterday unveiled a plan to triple the number of motorcycles and scooters in the city in an attempt to root out cars from the CBD.

“For some years motorcycle (riders) have suffered inequalities and also had problems with safety and security and this strategy is a move to address (those problems),” Ms Moore said.

“Clearly with congestion in Sydney and increased petrol prices being an incentive, people are looking for alternatives.”

On average a scooter uses between 3.6 litres and 4.2 litres of petrol per 100km, compared to more than 10 litres per 100 kilometres for a typical Australian six cylinder family car.

Other plans in the strategy to encourage more scooters and motorcycles in the city include:

  • Discounted parking in the city’s parking stations;
  • Investigating the introduction of charging points for electric models;
  • Advocate for cheaper road toll payments;
  • Call for motorcycle couriers to legally park in loading zones;
  • Trial on-street motorcycle locking devices to reduce theft; and
  • Ask the RTA to allow motorcyclists to park closer to the curb, where it is currently illegal for cars to park.
  • Free parking acorss our city … Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore saddles up yesterday.
